Adoraith: The Age of Sail
The Jalmaren Highlands
The Jalmaren Highlands – (A Viking Culture) The barbarians of the Jalmaren Highlands are possibly the most feared warriors in the world. These hardened warriors are used as mercenaries by other nations when the typically steep barbarian terms can be met. At home in the Highlands their days are spent in conflict with each other, the harsh climate, or battling humanoid and giant tribes. However, the clans are quick to unite when their is a clear threat to their lands or to form raiding expeditions which have reached as far south as Arvayheer. The barbarian religion is as harsh as their lifestyle. Ages ago the barbarians worshiped the Norse Pantheon and followed its dogma as it was originally laid down. Centuries later gods of Valhalla are still worshiped but the structure of their beliefs have changed. To die an honorable death in combat no longer guaranteed a warrior passage into Valhalla. Valhalla has become a place for the absolute elite warriors of the tribe. Barbarians believe that perhaps only once in a generation a warrior may exhibit the bravery and skill worthy of the gods. Warriors who ascend to Valhalla do not go to paradise. Instead they join the never ending wars that are fought by the Gods in Asgard. For the rest, an honorable death would ensure reincarnation back into the tribe. To be a coward would ensure passage into the afterlife. The barbarians do not believe in any form of heaven or paradise in the afterlife. What awaits the unfortunate soul who is not granted reincarnation is torture, agony, and indescribable horrors. Once sent to this “Hell” the soul is never given an opportunity for redemption. There are few who visit the Barbarians but those who do are typically treated poorly until they have proven themselves.
